Less Snooze, More Reading

I don’t know about you, but sometimes it can be tempting to hit the snooze button a few times before I get out of bed.  One way I combat this is by starting my day with reading.  I used to have a hard time justifying time for reading, but when you write for a living you kind of have to know what is going on in the world and in your genre. Plus, we all know reading is good for us, and that we should do more of it.

My stack of books for the year is very eclectic. I have business books, money and time management books, government and public policy books, stories about football players, and beach bums turned musicians, and books about military service dogs, birding and wild turkeys ( I never know what my husband is going to bring home). I also read Forbes, Wired, MIT Sloan, Construction Today, Think Realty, and Writer’s Digest.

My daily goal is around 20 pages, which takes about an hour depending on the subject matter. I absolutely love to read, so for me it is a good motivator to get up and get my day started.

My tip to you, collect a few books or magazines that you’ve been meaning to read. Make yourself a cup of tea or coffee and crank through a predetermined amount of pages or time.

Even if you only make time for 15 minutes a day you’ll still be further ahead on that material than you were last week! Another tip – do this before you check your phone, that way you don’t get sucked into email or endless scrolling.

Happy reading, fellow nerds!
